DarkWalls is a quiet, curated wallpaper app for dark hours. This page answers the questions we get most often. If your question isn’t here, send a short note to [email protected] and we’ll get back to you, usually within two business days.

Getting started

How do I save a wallpaper?

Open a wallpaper from the grid, then tap the download button in the bottom action bar. The first time you do this, iOS will ask for permission to add images to your Photos — tap Allow Access. Every saved wallpaper goes into a dedicated DarkWalls album inside Photos.

How do I actually set it as my wallpaper?

DarkWalls saves the image to your photo library; iOS handles the rest. After saving:

This is the standard iOS flow — no third-party app can set the wallpaper directly, which is by Apple’s design.

My saved wallpapers aren’t in a “DarkWalls” album

On some iPhones — especially if you tapped Selected Photos instead of Allow Access to All Photos the first time — iOS saves images to the general library without creating the album. To fix:

Favorites, downloads, and the catalogue

Where are my favorites stored?

On your device, locally. We don’t run servers that track which wallpapers you like — tapping a bookmark just records an ID in the app’s private storage on your phone. Uninstalling DarkWalls permanently deletes your favorites.

Can I back up my favorites?

Not through DarkWalls. This is a tradeoff we made for privacy — there’s no account system, so there’s no cloud backup either. If you switch phones, the built-in iOS backup (via iCloud or a direct Mac backup) will carry your favorites with the app. A fresh install on a new device with no phone backup starts empty.

Why does the download button ask me to wait a few seconds?

DarkWalls is free. A short Rewarded Interstitial ad before each save is what keeps the app independent. Watch the ad to completion and the wallpaper will save right after. Prefer no ads? See Remove Ads below.

How do I search for a specific mood or color?

Tap the search bar on the home screen or long-press the app icon on your home screen and pick Search. You can type a keyword (like “purple” or “forest”) or tap one of the tag chips to filter. Selected tags combine — pick two to narrow further.

The app is showing me the same wallpapers. Can I see more?

The catalogue is hand-curated, so it’s intentionally small. We add new wallpapers periodically rather than flooding the library with generic images. Check What’s New in the App Store for update notes.

Remove Ads

How do I remove ads?

Open Settings in the app and tap Remove Ads. Apple’s purchase sheet will appear with the local price. After purchase, ads stop immediately and stay off forever for your Apple ID.

I bought Remove Ads but ads still appear.

Tap Settings → Restore Purchases. This re-validates your purchase against Apple and writes the local entitlement flag. If it still doesn’t work, send your purchase receipt (Apple emails one) to [email protected] and we’ll help.

How do I get a refund?

All in-app-purchase refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can’t refund Apple’s purchases on their behalf.

Other questions

Is there an Android version?

Not at launch. DarkWalls is built on a cross-platform codebase, so an Android release is technically possible — if there’s enough interest, we’ll do the work. Let us know at [email protected] if you’d like one.

I’m a wallpaper artist — can I submit my work?

We curate very selectively, but we’re happy to look at pitches. Send two or three samples (or links) to [email protected] with a short note about your work. We reply to every submission, even if it’s a no.

The app crashed or behaved strangely

We don’t have remote crash reporting (that would mean collecting device diagnostics, which we’ve opted not to do). So we rely on people like you telling us. Please write to [email protected] with:

What data does DarkWalls collect?

Effectively nothing that identifies you. No accounts, no tracking identifiers, no analytics. The only thing that leaves your device is an anonymous “this wallpaper was downloaded” ping so we can rank popularity — and it contains no information about you. For the full audit-level answer, read the Privacy Policy.

How do I delete everything?

Uninstall the app. Every piece of locally-stored data (favorites, download counter, recent searches) is removed with the app. We have nothing on our servers to delete because we never had anything in the first place.
